howtobearunner (1) When Stephanie asked me to do a guest post on running I wasn’t sure where to start. Last Saturday, I ran a half-marathon out in St. Paul. It was cold but tons of fun. The majority of people I encounter seem to think running that distance is crazy. They always ask, “how do you do it?” The answer is simple, I just run. If you’re looking to do your first 5k, half-marathon, marathon, or even ultra, all you simply need to do is run. If you go into your training with the right attitude you can accomplish any distance. Go slow until you feel comfortable picking up your pace but above all, remember to have fun! It’s not about your final race time, it’s about enjoying the journey you took to get there. I hate to say it but Nike is right, JUST DO IT. So in my opinion if you want to be a runner, all you have to do is run!

I know that sounds easier said then done. I’m not one of those gals who running comes natural to. The first summer I started really training and bumping up my miles by a lot was one of the hardest things I have ever done. Training takes time. You need to plan ahead and make sure you have your week planned so you can get in all your miles. I’m pretty sure I’ve burned a few bridges and lost some friends because of how time-consuming my training became. My mother, who is a big runner, brought me solace by saying that they probably weren’t good friends to begin with. So true, Mom! Along with being time-consuming, training can be flagged with injuries. Injuries of some sort are almost inevitable. You need to power through the aches and pains and know that on race day you will be so happy you did. That said, be sure to listen to your body! I had to drop out of a marathon back in 2010 due to tendonitis. It was one of the most depressing things I have ever had to over come. When I look back on the injury I realized that I hadn’t listened to my body. I remember feeling some pain in my leg but kept running for weeks. That’s what caused my injury to become enflamed.

My final thought is about “Marathon Brain.” This is a term is use when I can’t stop talking about running. Not everyone is passionate about running and sometimes I can see people’s eyes gloss over in boredom when I start talking about running. I can almost hear them say, “oh, no here she goes again.” Hopefully you can find someone you can unload your Marathon Brain on but be sure to stay conscious of annoying others around you.

This is my advise from a super average runner. I’m by no means a fast runner but it’s one of my deepest passions. I hope you all can find some solace and enjoyment in running. Good luck on all your future races and training!!!

gym-essentials Hi y’all! I have been desperately trying to get out of this hibernation mood and trying to get in the gym every night after work! I have determined that there are a few things that are worth always keeping in my gym bag to make my life run a little smoother. What do you bring to the gym that is a must-have?

BTW… these headphones are AMAZING! They do not fall out and are sweat / water proof … I want to get them in every color now!
